It’s the last day of school and it makes me feel a certain kind of way.
When my students leave the classroom at the end of the day for that last time, I am overcome by a feeling that is hard to explain. That’s why I wrote this song.
Teaching is something that I truly love and I am thankful for every school year that I get to share with my students. I learn a lot from them and I put that in this verse . . .
I get what I call the teacher blues
Let me try to explain
These kids have been mine day in and day out
For the better part of a year
invested time, thought, and worry over every individual
they probably gave me more than I gave them, reciprocal
I know some teachers look forward to vacations and a much needed break. But for much of my career, I held down a summer job just to make ends meet. I still work all summer long as a wedding DJ, but I had some much tougher jobs when I was younger.
I can’t afford a vacation, I’ll be working all summer
Maybe that’s why there’s no elation and I’m feeling deflated
Teachers, let me know if you get that melancholy feeling at the end of the year.
